With bold names like the Big Dina, Black Prince, Beauty King and Pork Chop, these locally grown tomatoes have to taste better than the imported varieties, and they do. On Sunday, September 8th, 2013 the Ottawa Farmers’ Market is hosting the 3rd Annual Tomato Festival at Brewer Park.
This is our largest and most popular event celebrating Canada’s favourite vegetable. We live for tomato season. Once you’ve tasted a ripe local tomato, it is hard to imagine anything else.
The best way to revel in the taste of these glorious tomatoes, well, is to taste them. Tomato Festival is full of opportunities to sample some of the hundreds of tomato varieties grown locally and in our culinary creations.
Seasonal Tasting Bar – Jeff Taylor, a seasoned mixologist currently at D’Arcy McGee’s, will be serving hand-crafted market mocktails, including a fresh-made clamato, green tomatillo juice and a tomato water.
Chef’s Table – Savvy Vanessa is back to host our Chef’s Table with amazing cheese and tomato pairings. What goes better with a fresh roasted tomato soup than gooey grilled cheese? Our Chef’s Table is a seated tasting where our host shares the secrets behind the dishes you get to enjoy.
2nd Annual Vendor Salsa Competition – We are hosting our vendor salsa competition again this year – a rematch of sorts. Everyone can sample our salsas – mild or spicy, fresh or cooked – and vote for their favourite.
